Because we are a multi-line independent insurance agency, we can offer a variety of coverage options at competitive prices that will fit your boat and your budget. We have boat insurance policies to cover bass boats, sailboats, cruisers, pontoons, powerboats, runabouts, PWC's, hard bottom inflatables, and pretty much all other watercraft up to 36 feet long.

My boat is small, is it covered by my homeowner policy?

Homeowners and renters insurance often provide limited coverage for property damage for small boats like sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and outboards with less than 25 horsepower motors. If your boat is on that list, first ask us if your homeowner’s policy covers it and what your limits are. If your boat is covered, consider adding a Liability coverage endorsement.

Why do I need boat insurance?

Boat insurance is not required by law, but your lien holder may require it. You need boat insurance to protect your assets whether personal, business or both. Boat insurance covers these general categories:

  • Watercraft Damage Coverage
  • Bodily injury—if you cause a boating accident this insurance will pay for injuries caused to another person
  • Property damage—if your boat causes damage to someone else’s property
  • Other driver liability—for any legal expenses incurred by someone using your boat with your permission
  • Medical payments—for injuries to you and your passengers
  • Theft

Watercraft Damage Coverage

Your boat insurance policy will cover physical loss or damage to your vessel if you’re involved in an accident with another boat or object, like a dock, pier, buoy, rocks or debris. This coverage includes the hull, motors, fittings, and permanently attached equipment as part of either an actual cash value policy or on an agreed amount value option. But there are distinct differences between the two types of damage policies.

Actual Cash Value Watercraft Damage Coverage
Replacement costs less depreciation at the time of the loss will be covered by an Actual Cash Value policy. If the loss is total, the vessel’s approximate market value is determined by many resources like used boat pricing guides. Partial losses are settled by taking the total cost of the repair less a percentage for depreciation.

Agreed Amount Value Watercraft Damage Coverage
Agreed Amount Value is an option whereby you and the insurer agree on the value of your vessel, and that is what will be paid in the event of a total loss. If there is a partial loss, the Agreed Amount Value policy will also replace old items with new items.

Boat Damage Coverage also generally pays for damage caused by something other than a collision, such as fire, theft, or vandalism. Our boat insurance specialist will discuss other coverage for emergency services, wreak equipment and unattached boat equipment along with their limits.

What other coverage options should I consider for more protection?

Here are some options that will ad peace of mind to your days on the water. Like all insurance policies boat insurance is subject to limits and deductibles.

1) Watercraft medical payments coverage - helps pay medical costs if you or anyone on your boat is injured in an accident.

2) Watercraft liability coverage
If you are at fault in an boating accident this liability coverage will protect your assets by helps pay medical and other expenses of injured parties and the cost of repairing or replacing another person’s boat or property.

3) Emergency services
Don’t let a break down spoil a great day on the water. Emergency services coverage covers the cost of towing and labor as well as the cost of delivering fuel, oil or a battery.

4) Uninsured watercraft coverage
Of the thousands of recreational boating accidents each year, many are caused by an uninsured boater. Uninsured watercraft coverage helps pay for injuries sustained by anyone on your boat including you and your family.

5) Personal effects insurance
If your fishing equipment and other personal belongings are damaged, lost or stolen the Personal Effects Insurance policy will cover the cost of replacement.

6) Boat trailer coverage - covers repair cost when your trailer is damaged by accident or another unforeseen incident.
