What is car insurance coverage?

At it’s most basic an auto insurance policy protects you against financial loss associated with a car accident. Choosing the right auto insurance coverage will make it easier to put your life back together if your vehicle is destroyed or damaged by any accident event covered in your policy including fire and theft. If your vehicle is the cause of an accident, a good policy can provide additional protection against medical and legal expenses.

What is the minimum requirement for a car insurance policy?

The state of Florida minimum insurance coverage requirement is $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP), and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL). This requirement applies to all vehicles with four or more wheels. Florida is designated a no-fault state. If you are injured in a car accident, the PIP/PDL insurance coverage will pay your medical costs up to your policy’s limits, regardless of who caused the accident.

Additionally, the PIP insurance will also cover injury medical expenses for:

  • Members of your household
  • Your child riding on a school bus
  • A bicyclist involved in an accident
  • You as a pedestrian
  • Your other passengers who don’t own a car with PIP insurance
  • Your other passengers who don't have PIP insurance

A standard PIP insurance plan in Florida covers the following (up to your policy limit):

  • 80% of necessary medical expenses
  • 60% of lost wages
  • 100% of replacement services such as housekeeping or child care
  • Up to $5,000 for death benefits

Seasonal or part-time residents who live in Florida at least 90 days each year are also required to carry the mandatory PIP and PDL insurance, even if the 90 days are not consecutive.

Proof of car insurance must be carried within the vehicle at all times. Failure to keep your vehicle insured will result in up to three years license and registration suspension. These will be restored once proof of Florida insurance coverage is provided.

Remember that these are just minimum guidelines or requirements set by the state of Florida. However, even these minimums have not kept pace with the costs of medical care and car repairs, so additional coverage is recommended.

Should additional car insurance coverage be considered?

Of the many car insurance options available these coverages should be considered first:
• Bodily injury liability Insurance
• Collision Insurance
• Comprehensive Insurance
• Uninsured and underinsured motorists

Why should I get additional bodily injury liability Insurance?
This coverage is not required by the state but should be considered if you have assets. If you are at fault in an accident, the state required no-fault insurance will only cover the other driver’s property. If the other driver incurs medical expenses as a result of the accident the additional bodily injury liability insurance is needed to protect your assets.

What are the Similarities between Collision Insurance and Comprehensive Insurance?

Collision and comprehensive insurance policies are often discussed together because they both cover you for the cost of replacing or repairing your vehicle that has been in an accident.
Florida does not require either coverage, but of all drivers in the U.S., more than 70% carry both Collision and Comprehensive Insurance. A lender or lessor will require you to carry both coverages to protect the value of the vehicle as collateral. Both Collision and Comprehensive Insurance include a deductible, which is your out-of-pocket expense put toward covering the loss. Premiums for both Collision and Comprehensive Insurance coverage are based in part on the make, model and year of your car.

What's the Difference between Collision and Comprehensive Coverage?

Comprehensive Auto Insurance
Comprehensive is coverage for all incidents other than a collision. Following are some of the damages covered:

  • Glass breakage
  • Fire
  • Wind
  • Vandalism
  • Falling objects
  • Civil commotion or riot
  • Auto theft
  • A contact with bird or animal (includes collision with deer or moose)
  • Hail, water or flood
  • Explosion or earthquake

Are there things Comprehensive does not cover?
Comprehensive coverage will not reimburse you for personal property items stolen from your car. These are items not permanently attached to the car such as a wallet, purse, or cell phone (these items can be covered under a homeowners or renters policy).

The key here is “permanently attached.” In the case of a stereo that can be detached from your vehicle, the stereo will not be covered by your comprehensive policy. This kind of incident is one of the details our dedicated staff will bring to your attention.
